The Atari Hotel in Las Vegas is Officially Dead: What Happened and What’s Next for Phoenix

Six years after its initial announcement, the ambitious plan to build a video game-themed Atari Hotel in Las Vegas has been officially scrapped. While the concept of a “playable hotel” generated massive buzz when it was first revealed just before the Covid-19 pandemic, the deal for the Sin City location ultimately failed to materialize.

However, for retro gaming enthusiasts holding out hope, the dream isn’t entirely over—Atari is still pushing forward with its plans for a location in Phoenix, Arizona, though the timeline suggests a long wait ahead.

Game Over for Las Vegas

Back in January 2020, Atari made headlines with the announcement that it would be building several hotels across the United States. Las Vegas was set to be a crown jewel in this collection, with developers promising a venue “inspired by, and built with, classic and modern video game culture in mind”.

The Las Vegas vision was substantial:

  • Scale: Approximately 400 rooms.
  • Design: Featuring the iconic Atari logo on the front facade.
  • Location: Developers were looking to develop at least 5 acres of land on the famous Las Vegas Strip.

Despite assurances in early 2024 that the project wasn’t dead yet and that news would come later that year, that update never arrived. Now, the Las Vegas Sun reports that the project is officially dead. A spokesperson for Atari confirmed that while the company “explored developing a location in Las Vegas” in 2020 and 2021, “the deal didn’t come to fruition”.

Phoenix: The Last Hope?

While Las Vegas, Austin, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle were all on the original list of planned locations , the Phoenix, Arizona project appears to be the only one still showing signs of life.

In December 2025, Atari released new renderings of the Phoenix location, reigniting interest in the stalled venture. The details for this proposed location include:

  • Location: A 90,000 square-foot hotel near Central Avenue and Roosevelt Street.
  • Room Count: 72 rooms—a deliberate reference to 1972, the year Atari was founded.
  • Concept: Billed as the “first of its kind playable hotel for gamers”.

A Long Loading Screen: The New Timeline

Fans eager to book a stay should temper their expectations. Although local news outlets reported a potential late 2026 timeline, the official website paints a different picture.

The current renderings are center stage at AtariHotels.com, but the website’s timeline indicates that final construction and the grand opening are not scheduled until Q4 of 2028. Furthermore, a recent teaser trailer released by the company served double duty as an appeal for investors, suggesting that financial hurdles may still need to be cleared.

For now, the retro video game hotel of your dreams remains a digital concept rather than a physical destination.
