DC’s ‘Tournament Arc’ Goes Full Chaos: ‘Mortal Kombat,’ Homelander, and Annabelle Join the Fight

A comic book preview panel showing Superman preparing to fight Homelander from The Boys.

Just when fans thought the DC K.O. event couldn’t get any more chaotic, a new announcement has turned the superhero brawler into a multiverse-spanning spectacle. In a move that turns the entire event into a “mini-version of Injustice 3,” DC Comics has revealed a surprising roster of challengers entering the fray in the upcoming one-shot, DC K.O.: Boss Battle.

The tournament, which has seen DC characters “punching each other in the face” for weeks, is nearing its final leg. But before the ultimate winner can be crowned, the remaining fighters must face off against guest stars from Mortal Kombat, The Boys, and even The Conjuring universe.

A Bizarre New Roster: From Homelander to… A Haunted Doll?

The publisher announced the Boss Battle one-shot earlier this week, confirming a lineup that reads more like a fever dream than a standard comic book solicit. The guest fighters joining the tournament include:

  • Mortal Kombat: Sub-Zero and Shang Tsung (specifically the Mortal Kombat 1 versions).
  • The Boys: Homelander, the psychotic Superman archetype.
  • Horror Icons: Annabelle, the possessed doll from The Conjuring universe.
  • Comic Legends: Vampirella and Red Sonja.
  • Indie Favorites: Samantha Strong.

The Matchups: Superman vs. Homelander is Finally Happening

For fans who love “who would win??” debates, this one-shot seems designed to settle scores. Preview images for the book highlight several massive confrontations that fans have debated online for years.

The most notable headliner is Superman vs. Homelander, a clash of titans that pits the Boy Scout against his sociopathic counterpart. Other confirmed fights include:

  • Wonder Woman vs. Red Sonja: A sword-and-sorcery duel for the ages.
  • Black Lightning & Plastic Man vs. Mortal Kombat: The DC duo will take on Shang Tsung and Sub-Zero.
  • Batwoman vs. Vampirella: A seduction-fueled encounter.
  • Lex Luthor vs. Samantha Strong: The genius billionaire gets attacked by the “bear woman”.

The Plot: Grinding for “Omega Energy”

Why are these characters here? The narrative justification embraces the video game logic of the tournament arc. The remaining DC fighters need more “Omega Energy” to proceed in the tournament and eventually face Darkseid.

To bridge the power gap, they decide to use these multiverse characters as a means to “grind”—essentially treating Homelander and Sub-Zero as XP farms to level up before the final boss. It is a silly reason, but it fits perfectly with the tone of DC K.O., which has been described as “just that kind of event”.

Creative Team and Release Date

The DC K.O.: Boss Battle one-shot is written by Jeremy Adams, with art provided by a team including Hi-Fi and Carmine Di Giandomenico.

Readers can watch the fists fly and see if Annabelle can actually hold her own against superheroes when the book hits shelves on February 4.
