Catherine O’Hara, the comedy legend whose chameleon-like performances in Schitt’s Creek, Beetlejuice, and Home Alone defined generations of humor, has died. She was 71.

TMZ first broke the news, which was later confirmed by her representatives. O’Hara passed away peacefully at her home in Brentwood, Los Angeles on Friday, January 30, 2026, following a brief illness.

A Titan of Comedy Gone Too Soon

The world of popular culture is significantly darker today . For over five decades, O’Hara didn’t just make audiences laugh—she stole every scene she was in, appearing in some of the most celebrated films in history .

While the specific cause of death remains private beyond reports of a sudden illness, the outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues highlights the magnitude of the loss. She is survived by her husband, production designer Bo Welch, and their two sons, Matthew and Luke.

From SCTV to Hollywood Royalty

O’Hara’s rise began in the 1970s with the cult classic sketch show SCTV . It was here she forged lifelong creative partnerships with comedy giants like John Candy, Eugene Levy, Joe Flaherty, and Harold Ramis .

Her transition to film was seamless. After appearing in Martin Scorsese’s After Hours , she broke into the mainstream with Tim Burton’s 1988 classic ** Beetlejuice ** . As Delia Deetz, the eccentric artist and stepmother, O’Hara showcased her unique ability to be simultaneously loving, insanely weird, and hilarious .

She cemented her status as a household name playing Kate McCallister, the frantic but devoted mother in the global smash hit ** Home Alone ** (1990) and its sequel . While the role wasn’t overtly comedic compared to her sketch work, it proved her incredible range as an actress .

The Queen of Improv

In 1996, O’Hara changed the landscape of comedy again with Waiting for Guffman . Alongside Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy, she pioneered the “mockumentary” style. This largely improvised format allowed O’Hara to shine in over-the-top masterpieces like Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration .

A Renaissance as Moira Rose

Perhaps her greatest triumph came later in her career with the Canadian sitcom ** Schitt’s Creek ** . Created by Eugene and Dan Levy, the show gave O’Hara the vehicle to deliver one of the most incredible comedy performances of all time: Moira Rose .

As the former soap star with an unplaceable accent and a penchant for wigs, O’Hara won a Primetime Emmy Award and melted hearts globally .

Recent Work and Tributes

O’Hara remained a creative force until the very end. She recently reprised her role as Delia in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) and took a dramatic turn in season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us. She also starred in the Apple TV+ series The Studio alongside Seth Rogen, a role that earned her continued acclaim just months before her passing.

Tributes have already begun to pour in. Her Home Alone on-screen son, Macaulay Culkin, posted a heartbreaking message on Instagram: “Mama, I thought we had time… I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you.”.

Catherine O’Hara was, to quote a famous Schitt’s Creek scene, simply the best .
