Nintendo has officially dropped a new trailer for the highly anticipated sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and it brings everyone’s favorite dinosaur buddy into the spotlight. With the film’s release just a few months away, the latest Nintendo Direct offered fans a fresh look at the cast, the plot, and the adorable addition of Yoshi.
The sequel to the billion-dollar 2023 hit will officially hit theaters in the U.S. on April 1, 2026.
The Plot: A Rescue Mission Across the Cosmos
The story picks up after the events of the first film, where Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) have settled into their roles as protectors of the Mushroom Kingdom. However, peace is short-lived.
The conflict begins when Bowser Jr. (voiced by Uncut Gems director Benny Safdie) arrives to break his father, Bowser (Jack Black), out of his tiny prison. To stop this new threat, the brothers must travel across the cosmos, teaming up with familiar allies and powerful new friends.
New Cast Additions: Brie Larson and Benny Safdie
While the core cast returns—including Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad—the sequel introduces two major new players:
- Brie Larson as Rosalina: The Captain Marvel star voices the beloved princess who lives in outer space and raises the star-like Lumas.
- Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.: The filmmaker and actor steps into the role of the bratty but determined villain.
Yoshi Takes Center Stage
The highlight of the new trailer is undeniably Yoshi. Shigeru Miyamoto teased that Yoshi and “many familiar characters” will play active roles in the film. The footage shows Yoshi fitting in with Mario, Luigi, and Toad, and confirms that he won’t be the only dinosaur in the movie.
- Birdo: A brief tease confirms the appearance of the egg-shooting character.
- T-Rex: Longtime fans will spot a T-Rex reminiscent of Super Mario Odyssey.
Release Date Update
Nintendo has moved up the release date. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will now arrive in U.S. theaters on April 1, 2026, moving up from its original April 3 slot to align with global markets.
