First Look: Jason Momoa Finally Unleashed as Lobo in James Gunn’s ‘Supergirl’

Jason Momoa as Lobo, featuring white skin and long black hair, looking menacing in the new Supergirl teaser trailer

The wait is over for DC fans and Jason Momoa alike. After years of campaigning, rumors, and a cryptic “F—ing LOBO” text message to James Gunn, the first clear look at Momoa as the “Main Man” has officially arrived.

DC Studios President James Gunn dropped a new teaser clip that gives audiences their best glimpse yet of the Czarnian bounty hunter, confirming what many hoped: Momoa was born to play this role.

“Finally”: The Perfect Casting Comes to Life

In the new video, when asked about taking on the mantle of Lobo, Momoa simply responds with one word: “Finally”. It’s a sentiment shared by fans and the actor himself, who has described Lobo as the “perfect role” he has wanted to play for years, even during his tenure as Aquaman.

The teaser confirms that the Supergirl production has nailed the character’s signature aesthetic:

  • The Look: Momoa sports the iconic chalk-white skin, messy hair, and chain-wielding biker aesthetic that defines Lobo in the comics.
  • The Attitude: The footage captures the “larger-than-life” energy Momoa is known for, with Gunn himself noting that Momoa’s text upon hearing Gunn took over DC was simply “LOBO” in all caps.

How Lobo Fits into ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’

While Momoa’s casting is a dream come true, his role in Supergirl (hitting theaters June 26) presents an interesting narrative twist. The movie is based on the acclaimed comic run Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, a story in which Lobo does not originally appear.

The film, directed by Craig Gillespie, follows Milly Alcock as a jaded Kara Zor-El. Unlike her cousin Superman, who was raised by loving parents on Earth, Kara grew up watching her planet die. In the story, she is recruited by a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll (played by newcomer Eve Ridley) to help avenge the death of her father.

The comic’s primary villain is Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts. Krem is a ruthless pirate and leader of the Brigands, whose murder of Ruthye’s father sets the revenge plot in motion.

A Star-Studded Galactic Cast

Momoa isn’t the only big name traversing the galaxy with Alcock. The supporting cast fleshes out Kara’s tragic backstory and current journey:

  • David Krumholtz stars as Zor-El, Kara’s father.
  • Emily Beecham plays Alura In-Ze, Kara’s mother, likely appearing in flashbacks to the destruction of Krypton.

What’s Next for the Main Man?

The inclusion of Lobo in a story that didn’t originally feature him suggests James Gunn has larger plans for the character. Lobo is a mercenary who fits easily into the cosmic side of the new DC Universe, but he is too big a character—played by too big a star—to remain a cameo forever.

Whether he is hunting Krem, being hired to stop Supergirl, or setting up a future standalone project remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Jason Momoa has finally ditched the trident for the chain hook, and the DC Universe is about to get a lot louder.
