Sphere’s ‘Wizard of Oz’ Re-Release Breaks Records: How One Venue Cracked the Top 10 Films of 2025

In a statistic that sounds nearly impossible for the modern film industry, a single movie playing at just one venue managed to crack the list of the top 10 highest-grossing domestic film releases in 2025. The movie is the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, and the venue is the immersive, high-tech Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Despite the film being over eight decades old, its re-release in this specific venue generated approximately $260 million in 2025. Remarkably, it achieved this financial milestone in essentially just four months, having only opened in late August.

The Math Behind the Miracle: Ticket Prices and Capacity

How does a single location compete with nationwide releases? The answer lies in the unique economics of the Sphere. While standard blockbusters rely on volume across thousands of screens, the Sphere relies on premium pricing and massive capacity.

To put the numbers in perspective, The Wizard of Oz at the Sphere landed at number 10 on the 2025 domestic box office list. It sits just behind major studio releases like:

  • How to Train Your Dragon (Number nine at $262 million).
  • The Fantastic Four: First Steps (Number eight at $274 million).

The critical difference is the cost of entry. While standard movie tickets for films like The Fantastic Four cost roughly $15 depending on the theater, tickets for The Wizard of Oz at the Sphere generally start around $100. Additionally, the venue itself is significantly larger than a standard cinema, boasting a seating capacity of over 18,000. While not an apples-to-apples comparison with traditional cinema, the revenue generation is undeniably impressive.

Controversy vs. Crowds: The AI Debate

The road to this financial success was not without turbulence. When the first images and video of the Sphere’s version of The Wizard of Oz were released, the online reaction was “quick and merciless”.

Purists and critics complained that the new effects and remastering efforts completely altered the look of the original 1939 masterpiece. The backlash intensified significantly when it was revealed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) was utilized to help expand some of the images to fit the Sphere’s massive immersive display.

However, the online fervor appears to have had zero negative impact on actual ticket sales. Tourists in Las Vegas have continued to flock to the venue, with crowds described as “surprisingly large”. The enthusiasm is palpable on the ground, with fans attending shows dressed as characters from the movie. Unlike many other Las Vegas shows that eventually offer discounted seating, The Wizard of Oz tickets remain at full price, signaling that demand is still incredibly high.

Future Plans: Oz 2.0 and New Locations

Given the “Hollywood blockbuster money” the show is generating, Sphere Entertainment has no plans to slow down. If the show continues at its current pace, it could eventually join the elite “billion club” alongside franchises like Avatar and The Avengers.

Sphere CEO James Dolan has confirmed that the film will not stop playing anytime soon. In fact, an updated version—dubbed “Oz 2.0″—is coming later this year featuring all-new effects.

Dolan is optimistic about the production’s longevity. “What’s the lifespan of Wizard of Oz? It wouldn’t surprise me if we were showing Wizard of Oz 10 years from now,” Dolan said. He reiterated that they plan on running the film until demand falls off, which could be “a lot longer than a year”.

This success also comes amidst news of expansion, with a new Sphere location opening up near Washington D.C..

What’s Next for the Sphere?

While The Wizard of Oz dominates the screen, speculation is running rampant regarding what other intellectual properties might make the jump to the immersive venue. Rumors have swirled about mega-franchises like Star Wars or Harry Potter, though nothing is official yet.

However, James Dolan did reveal one confirmed upcoming project: a film titled From the Edge. Produced by the team behind the Oscar-winning documentary Free Solo, the film will chronicle “extreme sports athletes”. While From the Edge is expected to be finished later this year, it will not replace The Wizard of Oz; rather, it will likely run alongside it as the demand for the classic film shows no signs of stopping.
